Maternal Instincts

The moment life begins to form inside a womb, there is an instinct that kicks in. An instinct to protect, and instinct to nurture, to nourish, but most of all, an instinct to love.

I had a model-call this month for women who were expecting this summer to showcase the new maternity gowns I offer for anyone who books a maternity session. The theme of this session was "Maternal Instincts": going back to our roots and to nature. Embracing all the femininity of pregnancy.

These women were the living representations of how feminine and beautiful pregnancy is. These photos are a reminder that it's not only our bodies which adapt to pregnancy, but also our minds.

Moms' Meeting Their Babies For the First Time

Inside the places where women give birth, is a kind of electric energy that encompasses every ounce of space within it. I am honoured to be able to document such incredible moments. These photo of mother's first reactions to meeting their babies are some of my favourite works. They give us a glimpse of the spectrum of emotions that wash over a woman as she greets the tiny human she's been dreaming about.

Wanderlust: Mexico

At the very begining of this year we embarked on a journey with two of our best friends and we road-tripped down to Miami from Barrie for a much needed cruise vacation. (For those of you who aren't savy with the geographical locations of those points, it was a 33 hour car ride.)

We boarded an NCL cruise ship in the port of Miami, hung out in the sun, met some crazy awesome people, and I had THE BEST BIRTHDAY, EVER. I got to hang out with a bunch of capuchin monkeys at an animal sanctuary in Roatan and my entire year was made thereafter.

I of course, had my Fuji Film XT2 with me everywhere I went, and made sure to try to capture as much of our adventure as I could, I even found PIRATES! The most prominent thing I noticed all around me were the colours! Everything so rich and bright, it made coming back home to a gloomy and cold Canadian winter really tough.

Enjoy the glimpse into what we saw.

A Special Moment in Time: The Birth of Nathan

I had the absolute pleasure and honour of being present at my oldest and dearest friend's birth. This was their second child and I had been part of their support team for their first birth as well.

Amanda went early with her daughter, but her son had different plans. At almost a week passed her "guess date" she texted me saying she had been at the hospital for an NST and check and she was apparently 7cm dilated without having any actual labour symptoms. She was told to go home, but come back as soon as she had a couple contractions.

When she called me an hour later saying she was "starting to cramp" I raced over to meet them at the hospital. She was admitted at 10:00 pm and little Nathan was in her arms by 11:17 pm. It was the fastest labour I have ever attended, but ohhhhh so joyous.

My favourite part of this birth was the time and date of his birth. He was born at 11:17 pm, on 11/17/17. Pretty freakin' special if you ask me!
